FOR THE LOVE OF HOME-MADE CAKES

I love baking and decorating cakes. Each one of my creations is homemade with love! I can't bring you the taste here or the smell, but I can share with you the visual beauty of a cake and the story behind its creation. I invite you to comment and to possibly contribute some of your own pictures. Enjoy!

A Doll For My Doll!

I remember a doll cake that was made for me for my 16th Birthday.  I decided to try one for my daughter, Maggie for her 15th birthday. I borrowed a cake pan from a cake decor mentor of mine, Cynthia Turner from Cakeworks in Hamden, Connecticut.  The oval base of the cake was chocolate.  The dress was made from "funfetti" cake mix and the icing was vanilla.  The entire process of baking and frosing took place over 3.5 hours.  I purchased the "Barbie" for $5.44 at Walmart.  The glee on my daughter's face was priceless.

A Froggie Birthday!

My friend Marc Libin celebrated a birthday recently. I made him a lemon chiffon cake with lemon icing.
The original theme was going to be "geckos" but I could not find ANY. We shopped at Pier One, TJ Maxx and Joanne Fabrics looking for ornamental geckos. Even my husband got into the spirit of hunting for the cake topping. Ron found these adorable, bend-able frogs. I was going for a yoga pose on the left.
Reports from the birthday celebration indicate the cake was delicious and the frogs brought a birthday smile.

East Hartford After School Fun!

I found this story that peaked my interest in the Hartford Courant i-towns this past weekend. There is a new cake decorating club in East Hartford. I am trying to track down more information. In the meantime, I like the fact that kids are catching on to how fun cake decorating can be!

Lauren W Turns 19!

The cake is Devils Food. The decorations on the side are home made sugar cookies, dyed pink, then pressed into the side of the icing. Turning 19 never looked so pretty!

Decorate with Fresh Flowers!

One of my FAVORITE things to do with home made cakes is decorate with fresh flowers. This is a cake I made for my girlfriend Beckybeth as she celebrated her 39th! The flowers came from a $3/12 bunch at the local grocery store. The overall effect was lovely... just like the birthday girl.
